U9 make it 7 wins from 7 this season

Three players reached double figures with the bat as U9 made relatively light work of a strong Hertford team.

Austin and Bradley opened the batting, taking extra runs off several wide deliveries. Unfortunately they weren’t in sync all of the time and paid the price with 2 run outs.

Freddie (13no) and debutant Seb, calmed things down a little, batting and calling very sensibly and finding the boundary 3 times to take U9 to 242/2 at the midway point of the innings.

Olly then demonstrated just why he had been so eager to get to the crease all evening. He top scored with an unbeaten 19 runs off just 12 balls, helping himself to 3 boundaries in the process. Well done Olly! He and Felix worked well together to add an important 36 runs without loss for the third pair.

Final pair Hugo and debutant Ollie finished the Stortford innings in style. Hugo played his first ball with a lovely drive to the offside before finding the boundary in a fine unbeaten knock of 13. Ollie also batted with confidence and hit 2 off the final ball to nudge the U9 total over 300 at the close for the second time this season.

Even with the fast outfield, a target of 302 would take a bit of getting for home side.

Olly beat the bat with his first ball in an otherwise uneventful 10 overs in which Hertford made 243/1. The final 10 overs of the innings were far less sedate. Olly grabbed his and the U9’s second wicket of the innings thanks to a far from simple catch at wicket-keeper by Seb. Seb may have staked an early claim to take the gloves next season, preventing several extras with some neat work behind the stumps.

Soon after 2 more wickets fell. The batter dragging a ball from Freddie onto his stumps before Bradley did well to take a high catch against a low setting sun off the bowling of Austin. Bradley then helped himself to a wicket before Hertford, pushing hard for runs, suffered 2 run outs in the penultimate over. Both resulted from some excellent work in the field. First a direct hit from Austin and then, 1 ball later, from Seb, to leave Hertford 42 runs short at the close.

A big thanks to Sean for umpiring this game.

It has been a joy to oversee the Under 9 team so far this season. They are a motivated and enthusiastic group who clearly love playing the game. The quality of the cricket from players so young has also been very impressive so credit to them and of course to the BSCC coaching staff!

Well done U9.
