Knebworth Park beat BSCC by just 2 runs last Thursday (6/7/17) in a tense match, unfortunately knocking us out of the tournament.
They scored 277/3, thanks mainly to their last two batters who put on a useful 37 runs. In reply BSCC had another great start thanks to Stanley (21) and Ozzie (3), who put on 34 runs. Knebworth were clever giving three of their best bowlers 3 overs instead of the standard 2 overs per player, which placed some pressure on our latter batters. But, still we batted very well needing just 8 runs off the last two overs. However, 8 "dot" balls in these crucial overs did not help our cause, as we were left 2 runs short at 275/4.
The result was very hard on all our players, but I'd like to mention that 5 out of 8 players were only 8 years old and will get another chance next summer. This tournament has been a great experience both for all the players and myself in my first year as an U9s manager.
I am very happy with the progress they have all made in bowling, fielding and keeping skills, but protecting their wickets is something I will work on in the coming weeks. Today, we worked on a drill where we defended all straight balls and attacked all balls missing the wickets, which should help them get "tons" of runs in the future!
Finally, a very well done to ALL the 24 players who played the 9 matches in 2017.
